COLLATERAL DAMAGE: America’s War Against Iraqi Citizens:
Chris Hedges Lecture and Book Signing
Chris Hedges, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and bestselling author, returns to his war correspondent roots in COLLATERAL DAMAGE: America’s War Against Iraqi Civilians (Nation Books; June 9, 2008). In this exposé, Hedges and co-author Laila Al-Arian take the current occupation of Iraq as their subject, exposing the reality and extent of Iraqi civilian abuse by American troops. Based on interviews with 50 combat veterans, these pages describe, often in gruesome detail, the way in which American military protocol sacrifices the rights and humanity of innocent Iraqis. The interviewees that make up this volume represent the largest number of active servicemen and women to have spoken on the record about the atrocities taking place throughout the region at the hands of American troops. After five years of American occupation the troop casualty count has reached 4,000. Sadly, this number is but a shadow of the loss of life that has been endured when considering the Iraqi civilian count as well. Hedges and Al-Arian structure their narrative around key military operations: Convoys, Checkpoints, Raids, Detentions, and Hearts and Minds. Filled with first-hand accounts, COLLATERAL DAMAGE provides shocking revelations about the state of the U.S. mission in Iraq and the price that is being paid by so many innocent individuals.
Chris Hedges, currently a senior fellow at The Nation Institute and a Lecturer in the Council of the Humanities and the Anschutz Distinguished Fellow at Princeton University, spent nearly two decades as a foreign correspondent in Central America, the Middle East, Africa and the Balkans. Hedges, who has reported from more than 50 countries, worked for The Christian Science Monitor, National Public Radio, The Dallas Morning News and The New York Times, where he spent fifteen years. Hedges was part of the New York Times team that won the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for the paper’s coverage of global terrorism and he received the 2002 Amnesty International Global Award for Human Rights Journalism.

Stop Blackwater Demonstration,
San Diego Federal Courthouse, 880 Front St. (downtown San Diego/Front and Broadway)
Blackwater abused the City of San Diego's permitting process with a disgusting series of steps shielding their activities from public scrutiny. Then, when their subterfuge was discovered, they circumvented the City by going to a Federal judge--all to gain a foothold in Otay Mesa, for their new training facility at the border.
A Federal court hearing was held on the issue on May 30, 2008, followed by a Temporary Restraining Order issued on June 4, 2008, which forced the City of San Diego to grant Blackwater an occupancy permit for the Otay Mesa facility.
A FOLLOW UP HEARING WILL BE HELD IN SAN DIEGO FEDERAL DISTRICT COURT ON TUESDAY, JUNE 17, AT 10:30AM. WE WILL BE PROTESTING STARTING AT 10AM, 880 Front Street, downtown San Diego (Broadway and Front Street). Bring Signs, etc. (Park in Horton Plaza, free with kiosk validation)
CITY ATTORNEY MIKE AGUIRRE WILL BE ARGUING THE CASE FOR THE CITY BEFORE JUDGE MARILYN HUFF, APPOINTED BY THE PRESIDENT’S FATHER.
Note: If you wish to enter thecourt hearing, you must not have signs, T-shirts, or other expressive gear.
For More Info, Please Contact the Peace Resource Center of San Diego, 619-263-9301 or info@prcsd.org
You can read court documents, including Blackwater's complaint, the City's response and Judge Huff's ruling at www.prcsd.org (Click on the No Mercenaries button).

-5TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE IRAQ WAR MARCH & RALLY
Welcome in Spring! Shake off your Winter stupor with this energizing PEACE RALLY! Make your voice heard again, bring friends and family to let Washington and your community know that the never-ending Iraq occupation is NOT ACCEPTABLE!
Location: Normal Heights community
Schedule:
· street rally - noon to 1 PM, University Ave. at 43rd Street
· march (less than 1 mile) - 1 PM, from street rally location to TerAlta Park
· main rally - TerAlta Park, bounded by Orange Ave. (N), Polk Ave. (S), Central Ave. (E) and 40th St. (W) - speakers, poetry, and organization tables w/information. Eat lunch, and be energized!
Theme: "COSTS OF THE WAR" Ð The U.S. invasion/occupation of Iraq has led to well over 4000 American deaths alone; and roughly 30,000 American injuries. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have died and millions have been made homeless. These are conservative counts! YOUR taxpayer spending on Bush's Iraq "adventure" so far has been $493,000,000,000. Again, this is a conservative count. And this grows by about $185,000 EVERY MINUTE! Think you're getting a tax rebate this year because of recession? Think again. YOUR tax obligation of the Iraq invasion/occupation overwhelms any rebate . . . with principal and interest, you, your family, and your children will be paying thousands and thousands for years to come, JUST FOR IRAQ. Your dollars poured down this black hole have surely been a major contributor to the recession, and the drastic fall in the value of the U.S. dollar. INSTEAD OF INVESTING IN OUR FUTURE, THIS WAR HAS "INVESTED" IN WASTE . . wasted lives, dollars, the reputation of the U.S. world-wide. It is truly difficult to overstate this horrible, horrible cost.
So, come out and let your voice be heard! For a flier about the event, Click Here.

MARCH AND RALLY TO END THE WAR IN IRAQ;
FUND HEALTHCARE NOT WARFARE!
Posted October 25: Dear Members of the San Diego Peace and Justice Community,
After much discussion and with very heavy hearts, the planning group for this Saturday's March and Rally has decided that the event must be postponed due to the firestorm catastrophe unfolding in our county. We discussed links we see with shortages of local resources, the outcomes they've had on our fire crisis and the enormity of the devastation of Iraq. We debated whether the larger community would be open to this message. We decided, finally, that now was not the time for such a public discussion but rather a time for coming together in support of those most impacted by the fire's destruction.
With this in mind, we would like to urge each and every person who planned to come to the demonstration this Saturday to volunteer and/or contribute to relief efforts - especially for those who find themselves outside of the traditional safety net. Suggestions include the collection point at Chicano Park and the Displaced Farm Worker Drive. Please find details at www.sdcpj.org
We will seek to re-schedule the demonstration for the near future and appreciate your understanding.
We will also be posting links at www.sdcpj.org to the demonstration in Los Angeles for those who would like to travel there in solidarity of the National call date this Saturday.
Again, thank you for your understanding.
The Planning Group for Oct. 27th and the San Diego Coalition for Peace and Justice
***************************************************************
Postponed: Gather 12 Noon, Horton Plaza, Downtown San Diego, 4th and Broadway; March to Pantoja Park Park from 1-3 p.m.
The U.S. war in Iraq is responsible for killing hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqis and over 3700 American military personnel with tens of thousands more injured. It's time for peace and social justice activists and those fighting for universal healthcare to unite! Change the twisted priorities in this country. Please join us in an historic march in Sn Diego to demand that our government bring our troops home now, fund universal quality health care not war, and stop neglecting our vets.
